Marriage

What is marriage?

Marriage is the union of two people in a personal relationship.

What is the legal age to get married in Arizona?

The age of legal consent is 18.  If either person is 16 or 17, the consent of at least one legal parent or guardian is required.  For those under 16 years old, the consent of a legal adult and the approval of a Superior Court judge is required.

What is a covenant marriage?

A covenant marriage offers an additional option to couples who wish to marry.  In a covenant marriage, legal separation or divorce may be granted by the court only for specific reasons listed in state law.

Court wedding ceremonies

Arizona judges and justices of the peace can perform wedding ceremonies. Most ceremonies take place in Justice Courts (local courts that handle smaller legal matters).

Superior Courts do not usually perform wedding ceremonies, even though you may get your marriage license from a Superior Court location. This means you will usually need to go to a Justice Court for a court wedding ceremony.

Before you go to the court, call or check the website for the Justice Court location where you plan to have your ceremony. Each location has its own hours and requirements for weddings. Some locations may require you to schedule an appointment. Others serve couples on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment methods may also be different at each location.
