Prior to filing for a protective order you will need the following:

  • Time and patience
  • Photo ID (if available)
  • Address information of locations you wish to have protected (home, work, school, etc...)
  • The full name, date of birth, home address (if known), and any other potential addresses as to where they can be reached
  • The dates and facts of the domestic violence or harassing acts
  • Why you believe that domestic violence or harm may occur without protection
  • If a child or children are added to the order, you will have to have their date(s) of birth and Social Security Number (if known)
  • A personal address and phone number as to where you can be reached
  • Any additional information - physical description, Social Security Number, and aliases


Criteria:

  • The defendant is:
    • A spouse or former spouse
    • Your or your spouse's parent, grandparent, sister, brother, child, or grandchild
    • A roommate or former roommate
    • The mother or father of your child or unborn child
    • A romantic or sexual partner that you are currently or were previously involved with
  • And one, or more of the following
    • The defendant committed, or is about to commit a dangerous crime against a child under 15 years of age
    • The defendant:
      • Intimidates or threatens
      • assaults, either with a weapon or causes serious bodily harm
      • endangers
      • harasses
      • criminally damages or trespasses
      • kidnaps or unlawfully imprisons
      • uses technology to intimidate, harass, terrify, threaten, or offend
      • interferes with judicial proceedings
